The Romanian soprano was uneven, sometimes disconcertingly so, but she also proved herself an artist with fine resources for the coloration of her singing and with a dramatic power that did justice to the heroic qualities of the role. Sutherland by contrast caught the pathos but not the full nobility of this woman, whose defiance takes her out of the line of passive heroines such as Lucia, Amina and the Elvira of I puritani. Moreover, Nicolesco was expressive and unfussy: In the new recording, Gruberova seems to have Sutherland in mind, for despite the difference in their voices Gruberova’s brighter and slimmer and, bearrice a forte rather more edgy there are times when she could be mistaken for her predecessor.

As for the conducting, Zedda often brought a subtler touch to bear, where Bonynge’s distinction lay rather more in energy and efficiency. Pinchas Steinberg has neither Bonynge’s crisp sense of purpose nor Zedda’s more thoughtful sensitivity here, yet he too captures in the score something which eludes Bonynge and is an essential characteristic of Bellini, as in the start of that sadly swaying melody, ”Ah, scomigliato”, in the finale of Act 1.

In other respects the Decca recording of is distinctly preferable to the new one on the Swiss Nightingale label: The Agnese and Filippo of this new version have voices of unusually fine material, but the mezzo’s incipient tremolo and the baritone’s elementary sense of style make them poor substitutes for Josephine Veasey and the admirable Cornelius Opthof.

The tenor’s role in this opera is not a very fulfilling one, but vi Pavarotti sings it in the Decca recording he shares principal billing with Sutherland.

In his original review Andrew Porter wrote: The voice is firm, unstrained, even lustrous. He is not exactly a delicate beeatrice imaginative artist, but he. At the point where AP caught Pavarotti out, crying ”Oh gioia! An advantage of the new recording is that it gets substantially the same text on to two discs instead of three, omitting a brief passage between Filippo and confidant in Act 2.

A disadvantage is that the change of disc intersects the finale of Act I, coming only 3’18” before the end. A Bellini recital by Sutherland fills in the remainder of Decca’s third disc, taken tsnda her recordings of the complete operas in the early s, all with their share of the glories and faults of her singing in that period.
